Heat pumps come in two main styles: ducted (central) systems that use ductwork, and ductless mini-splits that deliver heat directly into rooms. Both can work well in Ontario, and the right choice depends on your home, your existing system, and your comfort goals.

What Is a Ducted Heat Pump?

A central ducted heat pump has an outdoor unit connected to an indoor coil on your furnace, or to a dedicated air handler, and distributes heated or cooled air through ductwork to every room. - Works with existing ducts from a furnace or central AC - One thermostat (or zones with dampers) - Hidden equipment, with only registers visible - Whole-home filtration and easy HRV integration

What Is a Ductless Heat Pump (Mini-Split)?

A ductless mini-split connects an outdoor unit to one or more wall-mounted, ceiling, or floor indoor heads via small refrigerant lines. - No ductwork needed - Room-by-room (zoned) control - Very efficient, since there are no duct losses - Visible indoor units

Ducted Mini-Splits: A Middle Option

Ducted mini-splits use a slim concealed air handler in a ceiling, attic, or closet to serve a few nearby rooms through short ducts, giving ductless efficiency without wall heads.

Which Is Better for My Home: A Central Heat Pump or a Mini-Split?

Your home Usually best
Existing forced-air furnace and ducts in good shape Ducted heat pump (often with the furnace as backup)
Electric baseboard, boiler, or no ducts Ductless mini-splits
Cottage or seasonal home Ductless (often one or two zones)
Addition, garage, or finished attic Ductless single zone
New build Ducted heat pump with designed ductwork, or ducted mini-splits
Older home with poor ducts Duct upgrades + ducted, or ductless

What Are the Disadvantages of a Ductless Heat Pump?

  • Visible indoor units that some people don't like aesthetically
  • Multiple heads needed for whole-home coverage, which raises cost
  • Closed-door rooms may need their own head
  • Filter cleaning for each head
  • Less whole-home filtration and fresh-air integration than a ducted system

Disadvantages of Ducted Heat Pumps

  • Duct losses if ducts are leaky or run through unconditioned spaces
  • Existing ducts may be undersized for heat pump airflow
  • Single-zone comfort unless you add zoning

Is It Better to Have a Ducted Heating System or a Split System?

If you already have good ductwork, a ducted heat pump is usually the simplest and most cost-effective whole-home solution. Without ducts, ductless is almost always cheaper than adding ductwork. Many Muskoka homes use both: ducted for the main floors and a ductless head for a bonus room or cottage bunkie.

Efficiency: Ducted vs Ductless

Ductless systems often post slightly higher efficiency ratings because there are no duct losses. In practice, a well-designed ducted system with sealed, properly sized ducts performs very well. Poor ductwork is the biggest efficiency killer. See Ductwork Installation.

Cost Comparison

  • Ducted: often cost-effective when ducts exist; duct modifications add cost
  • Ductless: cost scales with the number of indoor heads, so one or two zones are economical and whole-home multi-zone costs more

What Heat Pump Brands Are Being Avoided in Canada?

Avoid models that aren't rated for cold climates and brands without local parts and service support. Proper installation matters more than the badge.
