Not long ago, heat pumps had a reputation for giving up when the temperature dropped. That's no longer true. Modern cold-climate (CC) heat pumps are engineered to keep heating efficiently at −25°C and below, which makes them a practical primary heating system for Muskoka homes. Bridlewood Mechanical has been installing heat pumps across Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Muskoka for years, and they're one of the systems we install most. Here's what Ontario homeowners should know.

What Makes a Heat Pump "Cold-Climate"?

A standard heat pump loses capacity quickly as outdoor temperatures fall. A cold-climate heat pump uses:

  • Variable-speed (inverter) compressors that ramp up output as it gets colder
  • Enhanced vapour injection or similar technology to maintain capacity at low temperatures
  • Advanced defrost controls that minimize defrost cycles
  • Larger coils and refrigerants optimized for low-temperature operation

Look for models on the NEEP cold-climate heat pump list, which publishes verified performance at 5°F (−15°C) and lower. Many cold-climate models deliver close to full rated capacity at −15°C and keep operating down to −25°C to −30°C.

Do Cold-Climate Heat Pumps Actually Work in Ontario?

Yes, when they're properly sized and installed. At typical Ontario winter temperatures, a cold-climate air-source heat pump delivers two to three times more heat energy than the electricity it uses (a COP of 2–3+). Even at −20°C it generally remains more efficient than electric baseboards. For the coldest nights, most Muskoka installations include backup heat, either electric heat strips or a gas or propane furnace in a dual-fuel system.

Cold-Climate Heat Pump vs Standard Heat Pump

Standard heat pump Cold-climate heat pump
Efficient heating down to about −5°C to −10°C −15°C to −25°C+
Capacity at −15°C Drops sharply Close to rated capacity
Compressor Often single or two-stage Variable-speed inverter
Best for Mild climates, AC-first Ontario primary heating
Rebate eligibility Often not eligible Usually required for rebates

Ducted vs Ductless Cold-Climate Heat Pumps

  • Central ducted heat pumps connect to your existing ductwork and replace or pair with your furnace and central air.
  • Ductless mini-splits are ideal for homes without ducts, additions, cottages, and baseboard-heated homes. See Mini-Split Systems for Cottages.
  • Ducted mini-splits hide a slim air handler in a ceiling or closet for a few rooms.

What Is the Best Cold-Climate Heat Pump in Canada?

There's no single "best" model. The right one depends on your home's heat loss, ductwork, and budget. Leading manufacturers including Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, Carrier, Trane, Bryant, Lennox, and others all make strong cold-climate air-source heat pumps. What matters more than the brand:

  1. Verified cold-climate performance at −15°C and below
  2. Correct sizing from a heat loss calculation
  3. Quality installation: line sets, refrigerant charge, drainage, and mounting above the snow line
  4. Local parts and service support
  5. Rebate eligibility

How Much Does a Cold-Climate Heat Pump Cost in Ontario?

Installed costs vary with system type (ducted or ductless), capacity, number of zones, electrical upgrades, and ductwork changes. The upfront cost is higher than a furnace-only replacement, but lower operating costs and available rebates narrow the gap. We provide free written quotes that include expected rebates. See Heat Pump Installation Cost in Ontario.

Heat Pump Rebates in Ontario

Cold-climate models are typically required for heat pump incentives in Ontario, including programs like the Home Renovation Savings program. Programs and amounts change, so we check what's currently available for your home and help with the paperwork. See Heat Pump Financing & Rebates.

Heat Pumps vs Gas Furnaces in Ontario

A heat pump provides both heating and air conditioning, often at lower annual cost than a gas furnace plus central AC, especially in homes heated by propane, oil, or electric baseboards. For homes on natural gas, a hybrid (dual-fuel) system that keeps a gas furnace for the coldest days often gives the best balance of cost and comfort. See Heat Pump vs Furnace Cost in Ontario.

Installing a Cold-Climate Heat Pump in Muskoka

Our installations are designed for Muskoka conditions: - Heat loss calculation for correct sizing (not oversized, not undersized) - Elevated wall brackets or stands to keep the outdoor unit above snow and drifting - Drainage planning so defrost water doesn't refreeze - Line set and electrical work done to manufacturer specs - Ductwork assessment and custom sheet metal, fabricated in-house - Backup heat and thermostat setup, including dual-fuel switchover temperatures

See Heat Pump Installation.

Cold-Climate Heat Pump FAQs

Do cold-climate heat pumps work at −25°C? Many cold-climate models keep operating to −25°C or lower, with reduced but still useful capacity. For Muskoka's coldest nights, we design systems with appropriate backup heat.

Which brand of heat pump is best for cold climates in 2026? Choose a model with verified cold-climate performance (such as a NEEP listing), sized for your home, installed by an experienced contractor with local parts support. Installation quality matters more than brand.

How much does a cold-climate heat pump cost in Ontario? It depends on system type, size, and your home. We provide free quotes that include available rebates.

Can a cold-climate heat pump replace my furnace? In many homes, yes, with electric backup. In homes on natural gas or propane, pairing the heat pump with your furnace in a dual-fuel system is often the most economical option.
