Heat pumps are now the main heating and cooling system in many Muskoka homes and cottages. When one stops working, especially during a cold snap, you need a technician who knows heat pumps, not just furnaces. Bridlewood Mechanical provides heat pump repair in Muskoka for ducted air-source, ductless mini-split, and geothermal systems. Heat pumps are a core part of our business. We've installed and serviced heating systems in this region since 1975.
Our technicians diagnose and repair:
Muskoka winters are tough on heat pumps. Cold-climate models are engineered to keep heating well below −20°C, but they need to be properly installed, charged, and maintained to do it. Common winter issues include:
We also install proper wall brackets, stands, and snow protection so your outdoor unit keeps working through a Muskoka winter.
Yes. Most heat pump problems are repairable. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, sensors, and defrost boards are common, affordable repairs. Refrigerant leaks can often be located and fixed. Major components like compressors are more costly, and on an older system we'll give you an honest repair-vs-replace comparison. See Heat Pump Installation.
In our experience, the most common heat pump problems are: 1. Poor installation: incorrect sizing, refrigerant charge, or line set work 2. Dirty filters and coils restricting airflow 3. Defrost failures leading to icing 4. Electrical component wear (capacitors, contactors) 5. Refrigerant leaks 6. Thermostat or control misconfiguration, especially on dual-fuel systems
Most of these can be prevented with regular maintenance.
A yearly heat pump service includes cleaning the indoor and outdoor coils, checking refrigerant charge, testing defrost operation, inspecting electrical components, clearing condensate drains, and verifying thermostat settings. See Heat Pump Maintenance.
Because your heat pump provides both heating and air conditioning, one technician handles it year-round. We also repair the furnace in dual-fuel systems, so there's no finger-pointing between contractors. See Furnace Repair.
If your home loses heat in winter, call us. We prioritize no-heat calls, especially at cottages where frozen pipes are a risk.
We repair heat pumps throughout Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, Muskoka Lakes, Port Carling, Bala, Washago, and Orillia, and service cottages from Lake Muskoka to Lake of Bays.
Can a heat pump be repaired, or does it need replacing? Most heat pump problems can be repaired affordably. We'll recommend replacement only if the system is old, uses outdated refrigerant, or needs a major component like a compressor that doesn't make financial sense to fix.
Who is eligible for the Ontario heat pump rebate in 2026? Eligibility depends on the program, your home's heating fuel, and the equipment installed. Programs like Ontario's Home Renovation Savings program have specific criteria. See Heat Pump Financing & Rebates.
What heat pump brands are being avoided in Canada? Rather than avoiding brands, avoid equipment that isn't cold-climate rated for our region and brands with poor local parts and service support. We install and service trusted brands and make sure parts are available locally for faster repairs.
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter? It may be in defrost mode (normal for a few minutes), low on refrigerant, have a failed reversing valve, or its backup heat isn't engaging. If it lasts longer than 10–15 minutes, call for service.
Why is there ice on my heat pump? Light frost is normal in winter. Heavy ice covering the coil means the defrost cycle isn't working, airflow is blocked, or the system is low on refrigerant.
