Modern heat pumps are quiet, but they aren't silent. Some sounds are part of normal operation. Others signal a problem that should be fixed before it gets worse. Here's a guide to common heat pump noises and what they mean.
See Heat Pump Defrost Mode Explained.
Rattling: loose panels, screws, or debris in the fan; worn fan motor mounts; loose refrigerant lines vibrating against the house Buzzing: failing contactor or capacitor, or an electrical issue. Have it checked promptly. Grinding or scraping: worn fan motor bearings or a fan blade hitting ice or its housing. Turn the unit off and call. Screeching or squealing: failing fan motor or high refrigerant pressure Loud banging or clanking: a loose or broken internal component, or a compressor problem Gurgling or bubbling: possible refrigerant issues or drainage problems Constant clicking: control or relay problems
Winter adds its own sounds: - Ice on the fan blades makes a scraping or thumping noise - Frozen base pans cause vibration - More frequent defrost cycles
If ice keeps building up, see Heat Pump Repair.
If the outdoor unit hums but the fan isn't turning, common culprits include a failed fan capacitor, a seized motor, or ice blocking the blade. Turn the system off to avoid compressor damage and call for service.
New installations can be noisy if: - The unit isn't level or is mounted without vibration isolation - Line sets touch the building and transmit vibration - The unit is mounted on a wall without proper anti-vibration brackets - Refrigerant charge or airflow isn't set correctly
These are installation issues. Your installer should fix them.
Talk to your neighbour first. Excessive noise often means the unit needs service or better mounting. Some Ontario municipalities have noise bylaws covering mechanical equipment.
About 15 years for air-source systems with good maintenance. Unusual noises in an older unit can be early signs of wear. See How Long Do Heat Pumps Last?
Bridlewood Mechanical installs heat pumps with proper vibration isolation, snow-safe mounting, and correct refrigerant charge, and fixes noisy systems installed by others. See Heat Pump Repair.
