It's the simplest maintenance task in your home and one of the most important. A clean furnace filter protects your furnace, keeps indoor air healthier, and keeps heating bills in check. So how often should you change your furnace filter? For most Ontario homes, the answer is at least once every three months, and often monthly during peak heating season.
| Filter type | Typical replacement |
|---|---|
| 1-inch fibreglass or basic pleated | Every 1–2 months |
| 1-inch high-MERV pleated | Every 1–3 months |
| 4–5 inch media filter | Every 6–12 months |
| Washable/electrostatic | Clean monthly |
Always check the manufacturer's recommendation, but treat these as maximums. If the filter looks grey and dusty, change it.
In Muskoka, your furnace may run for hours each day from October to April. More runtime means the filter loads up faster. Check it monthly in winter and change it whenever it's visibly dirty. If you have central air or a heat pump, the same filter works year-round, so summer matters too.
Change your furnace filter once a month or more if: - You have pets, especially dogs and cats that shed - Someone in the home has allergies or asthma - You've had renovations or construction (drywall dust clogs filters fast) - You live on a gravel road or dusty rural property - You burn a wood stove or fireplace - It's a new build. Construction dust keeps settling for months.
Pull it out and look: - Grey or brown instead of white - Visible dust buildup on the pleats - You can't see light through it when you hold it up - It's been more than 3 months
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the heat exchanger. The furnace overheats, and a safety limit switch shuts it off. Over time, that stress shortens the life of the heat exchanger and blower motor. See Furnace Short Cycling.
Anywhere from 1 month (basic 1-inch filters in a busy home) to 12 months (thick 4–5 inch media filters). The thicker the filter, the more dust it can hold before restricting airflow.
Higher MERV ratings capture smaller particles, which is great for indoor air quality, but very restrictive 1-inch high-MERV filters can choke airflow on some systems. If you want better filtration, a 4-inch media filter cabinet gives high filtration with low restriction. We can install one during a furnace tune-up or replacement.
If your home has a heat pump or central air conditioning, the furnace filter protects that equipment too. A dirty filter reduces airflow across the indoor coil, lowering efficiency and potentially freezing the coil in summer.
Filter checks are included in every HVAC Maintenance Plan visit from Bridlewood Mechanical, along with a full furnace inspection. We serve Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and all of Muskoka.
