If your furnace fires up, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, and then starts again shortly after, it's short cycling. Besides being annoying, repeated short cycles reduce comfort, raise your heating bills, and wear out furnace components much faster. Here's what causes a short-cycling furnace, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a professional.
A healthy furnace usually runs for a solid cycle, often 10 minutes or more depending on the weather and the furnace, before shutting off, then rests before the next cycle. If your furnace shuts down after only a few minutes and restarts several times an hour, it's short cycling.
Somewhat. Shorter cycles can be normal on mild fall and spring days, when the house needs only a little heat. The concern is when your furnace short cycles for no obvious reason, in cold weather, or never seems to reach the thermostat setting.
1. A dirty furnace filter This is the most common cause and the easiest fix. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, the heat exchanger overheats, and the high-limit switch shuts the burners off to protect the furnace. Once it cools, it restarts, and the cycle repeats.
2. A dirty or failing flame sensor The flame sensor confirms the burners are lit. When it's coated with residue, it can't detect the flame, so the furnace shuts off the gas within seconds as a safety measure. Cleaning or replacing the flame sensor is a common winter repair.
3. An oversized furnace If your furnace is too large for your home, it heats the space so quickly that it reaches the thermostat setting in minutes and shuts off. An oversized furnace wastes fuel and wears out prematurely. The fix is a correctly sized furnace based on a proper heat loss calculation.
4. A faulty or poorly placed thermostat A thermostat near a supply register, a sunny window, or a heat source can read the wrong temperature and shut the furnace off early. A failing thermostat, or low batteries, can also send incorrect signals.
5. Blocked vents or restricted ductwork Closed registers, blocked return grilles, or undersized ductwork cause the same overheating as a dirty filter. Keep supply and return vents open and clear.
6. Blocked intake or exhaust vents High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes outside. Snow, ice, leaves, or nests can block them, tripping a pressure switch and shutting the furnace down, which is common during Muskoka winters.
7. A failing limit switch or control board If the limit switch or control board is faulty, the furnace may shut off even when nothing is wrong. These need professional diagnosis.
Safe homeowner checks:
If the furnace keeps short cycling after these checks, turn it off and call a technician. Problems with flame sensors, limit switches, gas pressure, heat exchangers, or furnace sizing need proper tools and training.
Most often it's a clogged filter tripping the high-limit switch, a dirty flame sensor, or an oversized furnace. If a new filter doesn't fix it, book a service call.
