Few things are more stressful than a cold house in the middle of an Ontario winter. If your furnace isn't turning on, the cause is often simple. Here are the most common reasons a furnace stops working, what you can safely check yourself, and when to call a heating technician.
Start with the easy checks. Many no-heat calls turn out to be a thermostat setting, a tripped breaker, or a clogged filter.
1. Thermostat settings or dead batteries Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat, the set temperature is above room temperature, and the display is working. Replace the batteries if it's battery-powered. Smart thermostats can lose Wi-Fi or have their schedule overridden.
2. Tripped breaker or furnace switch off Check your electrical panel for a tripped furnace breaker. Also look for a furnace service switch, usually a light switch on or near the furnace, that may have been turned off by mistake.
3. Furnace door not closed properly Furnaces have a door safety switch. If the blower compartment door isn't fully seated, the furnace won't run.
4. Clogged furnace filter A severely dirty filter makes the furnace overheat, and the high-limit switch shuts it down. Replace the filter and try again. See How Often Should You Change Your Furnace Filter?
5. Blocked intake or exhaust vents High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes on an exterior wall or roof. Snow, ice, or nests blocking these pipes trip a pressure switch and stop the furnace, which is very common after a Muskoka snowstorm. Carefully clear the snow around the vents.
6. Gas supply issues Check that the gas valve to the furnace is open and other gas appliances are working. For propane, make sure the tank isn't empty. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
7. Failed ignitor or dirty flame sensor Modern furnaces use a hot surface ignitor and a flame sensor. If the ignitor cracks, the burners won't light. If the flame sensor is dirty, the furnace lights and then shuts off within seconds. These are among the most common winter furnace repairs.
8. Condensate drain blockage High-efficiency furnaces produce water. If the condensate line or pump is blocked or frozen, a safety switch stops the furnace.
9. Blower motor or capacitor failure If you hear humming but no airflow, the blower motor or its capacitor may have failed.
10. Control board fault The control board runs the whole sequence. Many furnaces have a status light that blinks an error code. Check the chart on the furnace door and note the pattern for your technician.
If the control board's status light is off completely, the furnace likely has no power: a tripped breaker, the service switch off, a blown fuse on the control board, or a failed transformer. If the light is blinking, it's reporting a fault code.
If your furnace starts and then stops working shortly after, see Furnace Short Cycling. Dirty flame sensors, overheating, and blocked vents are the usual causes.
Call a licensed technician if: - The simple checks above don't fix it - The furnace shows a fault code you can't clear - You hear banging, grinding, or buzzing - Your carbon monoxide alarm sounds (leave the home first) - You smell gas or burning - It's cold enough that pipes could freeze
Bridlewood Mechanical provides prompt furnace repair across Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, and Muskoka for gas and propane furnaces. See Furnace Repair.
Annual furnace maintenance catches worn ignitors, dirty flame sensors, weak capacitors, and drainage problems before they leave you without heat. See HVAC Maintenance Plans.
